Welcome to the final year at Spalding Primary School where we aim to make it the best yet!
In Year 6, we focus on preparing for life beyond primary school. We have taken on extra responsibilities around the school such as playground leaders and school councillors. We place a big emphasis on the children learning to become responsible citizens who are aware of their roles, rights and responsibilities for themselves and towards the community. This helps them to see themselves as positive role models, and reflects how we are growing up and becoming ready to move on to secondary school.
This year, our work will consist of a range of challenging topics and questions! In terms 1 & 2 our question is "What was life like in Victorian England?" The children will find out about life during Victorian times, especially for those who were poor. They will use their independent research skills to explore a variety of aspects of the Victorian era, such as home, school and family life and the legacy the Victorian era has left for us today.
In DT the children will design their own Victorian sampler and also make Christmas cards and decorations themed around this topic.
In Science the children will carry out a number of investigations throughout the year, often investigating their own questions. They will look at evolution and adaptation and find out about the life of some famous scientists in history. Later on in the year, they will explore living things and their habitats and look at animals including humans.
In R.E. we will explore our natural world, considering what makes the world beautiful. The children will explore the creation story looking at both Christian and Buddhist beliefs.
For more information on what we are doing throughout the year please look at our Curriculum leaflets, attached to the Acorn and also on the website and Blog.
In addition to all this, we also prepare for our SATs in May! We work hard to produce high quality work in maths and English to achieve the best we can before we leave to join our secondary schools. However, we try to take a balanced approach, encouraging the children not to worry, as it is a year filled with amazing activities, fantastic fun and responsibilities to be relished.
A great way to keep up to date with what the children are learning is to have a look on our BLOG. We update this once a week with exciting activities that we have done, accompanied by any photographs we have taken.
